by Avatar in Green Tea September 8, 2020

Oolong Tea for weight loss? Here’s a fun fact to start with.

The health properties of Oolong tea can be quite similar to those of black or green tea.

But it depends on the way your tea maker is processing the tea leaves after harvesting them.

With that fun fact in mind, let’s jump into the blog post answering one core topic – How will Oolong tea help in your weight loss journey.

What is Oolong tea?

Oolong tea is a highly sought after tea variety, found in hilly regions of China and Taiwan. Growing oolong tea leaves is considered as an art because its shape, size and flavour depend on where they are grown. Apart from the place of birth, these tea leaves also exhibit strikingly different properties based on how they are processed in the factory.

In Simple words, the property of Oolong tea leaves depend upon how and where they are grown.

Where are Oolong tea plants commonly grown?

Oolong tea can be found in a variety of geographical locations across the world. Some of the most famous places of their growth are in the following countries.

  • China
  • Taiwan
  • India
  • Sri-Lanka
  • Japan
  • Thailand
  • New Zealand

I source most of my Oolong tea leaves from the local sources in India. So if you’re buying from us, you can be sure that the Oolong tea you consume is made in India.

From the best farms of Darjeeling region.

What is the nutritional composition of Oolong tea?

Before you read through the benefits and weight loss abilities of Oolong tea, you need to take a look at its Nutritional facts.

Just like black and green tea varieties, Oolong tea also has a similar amount of vitamins, minerals and health-boosting antioxidants.

Here’s what a cup of Oolong tea will contain (these are approximate values)

  1. Composition of Manganese: 26%
  2. Percentage Potassium: 1%
  3. Composition of Sodium & Magnesium: 1% each
  4. Percentage of Fluoride: 5–24%

Oolong tea also has an average of 36- 40 mg of caffeine in each serving. This serves as a bonus to the beautiful health benefits offered by this tea variety.

Here’s another fun fact before you read further:

The word ‘Oolong‘ refers to the term “Black dragon” in Chinese.

Moving on…..

How can Oolong tea help in your weight loss journey?

Your weight loss must always fulfill one common principle

Expenditure of Energy >>> Calories consumed.

In simple terms when you exercise more and eat less, you spend more energy than you consume. This causes a metabolic shift and enables you to lose weight. Oolong tea helps you lose that weight by doing two things in common

  1. Increases your Basal Metabolic Rate (you spend more energy)
  2. Increases your digestive capabilities (i’ll digest effectively)

With both these factors, Oolong tea forces your body to spend more energy than usual. This allows your body to shed those extra kilograms efficiently.

Here are five ways in which oolong tea can help you loose weight.

  • The vitamins and Minerals in Oolong tea increase the absorption and assimilation of essential nutrients in the body
  • The Anto-oxidants prevents the oxidation of cells and increases your basic Energy expenditure
  • A decent amount of caffeine helps you burn more fat while working out (it’s a primal benefit of caffeine)
  • It cures your digestive tract of any lingering issues and bacteria (healthy gut = better digestion and absorption)

And the most important benefit –

  • Oolong tea is free from sugar and low on the calories.

Replacing 2-3 cups of oolong tea in place of your beverages can help you lose unwanted calories.

Think about it!

A cup of coffee (with milk and sugar) has a minimum of 150 calories.

When you replace two cups of this coffee with oolong tea, you save your body from an additional 300 calories.

Add this over a week and you save yourself 300*7 = 2100 calories. (Reducing such calories will need you to walk 7-10kms a day for a week).

With a higher metabolic rate and lower calorie consumption, Oolong tea can help you lose a ton of weight before you know it.

Here are the other benefits of Oolong tea beyond weight loss?

1. It can help you prevent diabetes

Oolong tea has polyphenols and they keep your blood sugar and insulin levels in check. These polyphenols act as an antibiotic for people suffering from type 2 diabetes.

2. It can help you prevent heart diseases

As I have mentioned above, Oolong tea has a high amount of polyphenols that reduce cholesterol levels in your body. This wonderful enzyme also helps you dissolve stubborn body fat by jumpstarting the production of lipase enzyme.

These enzymes increase the rate of fat absorption and assimilation in your body.

3. It can improve your brain functions

If you take a look at the ingredients section of this blog post, you’ll understand that there is a good amount of caffeine in Oolong tea. This caffeine will keep you alert and awake after consuming Oolong tea.

Yet again, the polyphenols in Oolong tea leaves will help you lose the anxiety and stay calm like M. S Dhoni in the final over (not really, no one can be cool like M. S Dhoni). But it can get you immediate relief from anxiety and bring you a sense of calm after consumption.

4. It can help you improve your bone strength (prevents osteoporosis)

Oolong tea can help you maintain bone health and prevent the plaque buildup in your teeth. For older people, Oolong helps them increase their bone density and prevent osteoporosis.

What is Osteoporosis?

  • It is a clinical phenomenon where the bones become brittle and the chances of a fracture is increased exponentially

You need to understand that oolong tea will not cure osteoporosis, but will just act as a remedy for osteoporosis.

5. It can help you relieve eczema

Finally, Oolong tea can help you clear your skin of any blemishes and diseases like Eczema. Regular consumption of this tea has also been proven to reduce ageing effects on the skin of old people.

2-3 cups of Oolong tea a day = healthy skin in the long term.

The five points that I mentioned above were just some of the best benefits of Oolong tea.

Here are some more added benefits of consuming Oolong tea.

  • Oolong tea Promotes healthy hair growth
  • This tea can improve your sleep patterns
  • It can help you improve your mood

What are the side effects of Oolong tea?

“Oolong tea has so many benefits, so it must have some side effects”

This is a common term I get from my customers.

They believe that Oolong tea has a ton of benefits, so it must come with some side effects.

There are no side effects if you consume Oolong tea in Moderation (2 – 3 cups/day). But some things that you need to keep in mind –

  • Consuming oolong tea at healthy limits is unlikely to bring about any side effects.
  • High consumption can cause sleeplessness and feelings of insomnia.
  • the high caffeine content in oolong tea (30-40 mg in every serving), can also increase anxiety in some people.

So if you’re someone who is sensitive to caffeine, you should consume Oolong tea in small quantities.

Don’t blame me when you can’t sleep after consuming 3 cups of oolong tea after dinner.

What if I don’t love the taste of Oolong tea even if weight loss is a priority?

Most of my customers love to consume oolong tea regularly. But if you’re a foodie or someone who has sensitive taste buds, here’s a recipe to spice things up.
