by Avatar in Uncategorized September 29, 2020

To understand the waxing moon and waning moon phases and their importance in ayurveda , let us begin with knowing that the moon and an influence on the water.

Yes. It does influence the water. And hence the impact on the way the tides rise and fall.

Our body is made up of at-least 70% of water.

So it is natural that the moon has an impact on our body too. And also on the water in our mind.

Both body and mind are under the influence of the moon.

What are waning moons and waxing moons?

The moon is a complete circle on full moon day.

And on new moon day it reduced to its minimal size (visibly).

When the moon moves from full moon to new moon, it is in its waning phase.

We call it the ‘waning moon’

And when the moon is moving from new moon to full moon, we call it the ‘waxing moon’

Each journey is 14 days long

With the cycle lasting for 28 days.

Now, why does waning and waning moon phases matter in ayurveda?

As we learned above that our body comes under the influence of the moon, mainly because of the water present in our body.

It is evident that Ayurveda, the oldest known guideline for human health, will have considerations about the waxing and waning moon and what to do about it.

The moon reflects the sun’s energy through light, with balanced heat. And hence, it helps in calming of mind, reducing anxiety and depression and controlling the blood pressure.

11th days of both waning moon and waxing moon phases are considered to be the days of cleansing one’s body and soul.

Scientifically, from the very 11th day of the moon’s journey (in waning or waxing phase), its effect on water increases, making it the right time to cleanse the body and mind.

Why to cleanse?

Our body and mind contain a lot of dead cells present in the water. If this water is present (via digesting food) then moon’s effect will aggravate the dead cells.

If any positivity is present in our mind during this phase then the moon’s effect will enhance the positivity.

Hence, it is important to not eat or even drink water during this phase.

Waxing and Waning Moon: Ekadashi

In the Indian culture, many follow the fasting on these two days, calling them Ekadashi fasting.

This fasting helps you cleanse your body by flushing away the toxins and helps reduce negativity from the mind.

As per ayurveda, these are the two best days of the month to perform all-day fasting and calm the mind.

Because the moon’s position helps both body and mind to utilize the cleansing activity with the most effectiveness.
